It’s natural to want a flawless smile, but very few people come by them naturally. Issues like stubborn stains, chips and cracks, mild gaps, or slightly crooked teeth can cause anxiety if you’re overly worried about how others might judge the way you look.

Thankfully, your dentist can provide veneers to upgrade your appearance and boost your confidence. These thin, ceramic shells are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to mask one or several unsightly imperfections. If you’re wondering how long it takes to get veneers, continue reading to learn more about the process!

Step #1: Consultation & Examination

Before being fitted with these restorations, you must consult your dentist to verify that you’re a good candidate. They’ll update your medical history and discuss the outcome you hope to achieve to ensure that veneers are the best procedure for your unique circumstances.

Then, they’ll examine your teeth and gums to ensure no pre-existing issues, like cavities or gum disease, interfere with the results. The porcelain covers can’t develop decay, but if the underlying teeth are damaged or destabilized, they can fall off. If they find any areas of concern, they’ll treat them first. Once your mouth is clean, you can continue with your elected procedure.

Step #2: Preparation & Impressions

Next, your provider must remove a thin amount of enamel so your prosthetics fit correctly flush against your gumline. This protective outer layer doesn’t regenerate, making this an irreversible change to your grin. Thankfully, veneers are coated with a durable glaze that prevents chipping and discoloration, shielding your smile.

Once the preparation is complete, they’ll make impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory to begin creating your veneers. It can take a few weeks before they’re ready, so your dental team will fit you with temporary restorations to protect your pearly whites until they’re delivered.

Step #3: Fitting & Final Placement

Once your finished veneers arrive, your dentist will schedule you for a final fitting. They’ll check the shape and color of your prosthetics; if everything meets expectations, they’ll prepare your teeth to bond them in place.

This involves gently roughening your enamel so the cement adheres more thoroughly to the surface of your teeth. They’ll place some on each veneer and arrange them over the front surfaces to hide any visible issues. Finally, they’ll clean off any excess material and polish your teeth before sending you on your way.

Understanding what it takes to get veneers can help you decide whether it’s the right treatment for you!
